A Thanksgiving Perspective

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the attacks on any link between Christianity and Christmas continue unabated. This year has also featured recent attacks on Thanksgiving, siting it as a homage to gluttony and consumption.

I believe the real issue is a desire to attack anything positive that may relate to America, something that the left feels honor bound to participate in. I could comment on being hung with a rope they helped make, but that is not the purpose of this posting.

If you look at mass media today, you see Thanksgiving as a holiday getting short mention. Other than a few parades and college football, Thanksgiving is almost non-existent in terms of media coverage or recognition in most shopping venues (most store decorations went straight from Halloween to Christmas).

I believe that most of our current media and marketing really don't know what to make of Thanksgiving, and that is fine with me. There isn't really anything they've found yet to grab hold of for commercialising it (outside of turkey sales), and the true purpose of the holiday hasn't really allowed anyone to prostelize against it to any extent. This doesn't mean there isn't a desire to do so, after all this is an AMERICAN holiday and automatically suspect to the left.

What is the purpose of this holiday, Thanksgiving? There really is no secret, its name says it all; to be thankful for what we have and share that thankfulness with our families and friends. No matter your religious beliefs, there is nothing in this sentiment that you can justly be offended by, since this is something that is truly universal.

As a family, we have always tried to get everyone together for both holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas), yet over time, the Thanksgiving holiday is the one that has become truly special and for which the extra effort goes into for getting everyone together. For many of us, this may be the only time during a year that we get to see each other and our families. There is no pressure for gifts, no financial burden to go shopping, just a shared meal and time to visit and share the changing face of the family as new members are born and others pass.

This sharing and thankfulness for our families and what we have is (to me) the true meaning of the Thanksgiving Holiday, and one we can share with everyone.

So I wish that everyone has a happy Thankgiving in the true meaning of the holiday!
